Lance and his team may have crossed the finish line of the 2015 Yukon Quest in 14th place, but they were still big winners.  At the Quest Banquet, Lance received both the Challenge of the North Award and the Sportsmanship Award.

The Challenge of the North Award is presented to the musher who most exemplifies the Spirit of the Yukon Quest; a spirit that compels one to challenge themselves and persevere in spite of all odds against them.  This award is selected by the Race Marshall and Judges.  In accepting the honor, Lance explained,  “I love this sport. I love this race. I love the people in it. And most importantly, I love the lifestyle.”

Fellow mushers selected Lance as the Sportsmanship Award recipient.  This award is presented to the musher who demonstrates outstanding sportsmanship along the trail.

Lance was overwhelmed with emotion as he accepted both awards  “All I wanted to do was have fun. I haven’t really had fun for the last several years…  I had the time of my life,” Lance said, as he choked back tears.

“I’m just a guy with some dogs who happened do well in this race and I’m not looking for any special recognition,” he said in an interview after the banquet. “I’m not looking to be different from anybody else and I don’t feel that I am.”
